I recently learned about Friday Harbour at a meeting for Houston Beer Week whose proceeds will benefit Live It Big: a non-profit that raises money for charities, one of which is Friday Harbour. This charity, in particular, holds a special place in my heart because I can identify with those whom it is assisting. My Father passed away from brain cancer 10 years ago. He was in Florida when he died, and when he was diagnosed, which made it difficult for myself and my sisters to physically be there for him. But, we did so as much as we could. His particular form of cancer made his time with us very short after diagnosis, because it was such an aggressive cancer. Thankfully, we all had the financial capacity to be there with him as much as possible before he died, but it was hard.
I cannot imagine what that would have been like if we didn't have the means to see him. It would have been terrible. There are so many families that stop their lives and set up temporary residence in Houston to be with loved ones who are being treated at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Cancer treatment is costly and can drain the resources of both the patient and their loved ones. Friday Harbour's mission is to "provide free temporary housing for cancer patients and their caregivers as they seek cancer treatment at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Texas Children’s Cancer Center in Houston, Texas." This is done through the support of hotels, corporate sponsors and individual donors. If you or someone you love has ever fought this disease, you can understand why this type of assistance is so meaningful and much needed.
